Painters in Knoxville, TN: What to Ask Before You Hire
Knoxville has a lot of older painted brick and wood-sided homes in Sequoyah Hills, Fourth and Gill and North Knoxville, plus newer vinyl-and-hardboard builds out toward Farragut and Hardin Valley. Those two groups need completely different prep. Here is what to ask, what it should cost in 2026, and how licensing actually works in Tennessee.

Tennessee licenses contractors above $25,000
The Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors requires a state contractor license for projects of $25,000 or more, and that includes painting at that size. Most Knoxville repaints fall below the line, in which case the license question does not apply and insurance does.
Ask for the certificate of insurance directly from the agent — general liability and workers' compensation. If the quote is near or above $25,000, ask for the license number and check it on the state's verification site before you sign.
Prep questions for older wood and painted brick
On a pre-1960 Knoxville home, ask how failing paint gets addressed: scraping and feather sanding, spot priming with a bonding primer, and what they do about glazing on old wood windows. Ask which sashes are included, because window work is where a low bid hides.
Painted brick is its own decision. If yours is already painted, the question is whether a breathable masonry coating is being used so trapped moisture can escape. If it is not painted, a good Knoxville painter will tell you the honest tradeoff instead of just selling the job.

Anything pre-1978 falls under the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting rule, so the firm should be Lead-Safe certified. Much of the housing stock inside the city qualifies.
