Licensed, insured and background-checked — the Henry Standard.

Indianapolis has one of the shorter exterior painting seasons in the country and one of the older housing stocks in the Midwest. Those two facts drive almost everything about pricing here. A century-old Meridian-Kessler or Irvington home means scraping, wood repair and lead-safe practices; a Fishers or Westfield build from the 2000s means vinyl, brick and trim work. And either way the exterior window is roughly May through October. These are the 2026 ranges homeowners report on quality work.

The Henry Standard

Every painter in our network agrees to three things.

Show up

Call back. Keep appointments. And if something changes, communicate it.

Quote honestly

Clear scope, materials, and pricing in writing—so you know what you're agreeing to.

Finish the work

See the job through and take care of the agreed-upon work before calling it finished.

Nothing revolutionary. Just the way we believe doing business should still be done.

When to schedule painting in Indianapolis

Exterior painting in Indianapolis runs roughly May through October. Most quality coatings require surface and air temperatures above 50 degrees — some low-temp products go to 35 — and, just as important, temperatures must stay above that through the overnight cure. An October afternoon can be perfect while the night drops to 38, which is how a fall paint job ends up chalky or poorly bonded. Humidity in July and August slows drying but rarely stops work. Book spring slots by February; every good crew in Marion County fills May and June first. Interiors are year-round, and winter is the best time to get them scheduled.

Permits and HOA rules

Indianapolis does not require a permit for ordinary residential repainting. What does apply here is the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting rule: a large share of homes in Irvington, Fountain Square, Meridian-Kessler and the near-north side predate 1978, and any crew disturbing painted surfaces on those homes must be RRP-certified and use lead-safe containment. Historic districts — Lockerbie Square, Chatham Arch, Herron-Morton Place, Old Northside and Irvington — require Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission approval for exterior color and material changes. Suburban HOAs in Carmel, Fishers, Zionsville and Westfield enforce their own palettes.

Licensing and insurance in Indiana

Indiana has no statewide painting contractor license. Indianapolis requires local contractor registration for many trades, so ask for it and verify with the city. Then get general liability and workers compensation certificates sent to you directly by the insurance agent — not forwarded by the contractor. On any pre-1978 home ask for the EPA RRP certification number, which is federal and applies regardless of state licensing. Confirm the business has a permanent central Indiana address and a multi-year history, and get the labor warranty in writing.

Freeze-thaw is what kills exterior paint here

Water gets behind a coating through a failed caulk joint or bare wood, freezes, expands and lifts the paint from the substrate. That is why Indianapolis exteriors fail in patches at joints, sills and south-facing trim rather than fading uniformly.

The defense is caulking and priming bare wood, not a more expensive topcoat. Ask specifically how many linear feet of caulk are in the bid and whether every bare spot gets spot-primed before the first coat.

Older homes: lead, scraping and repair

On a pre-1978 Indianapolis home, the paint is a fraction of the job. Expect scraping, wood replacement on sills, fascia and porch elements, spot priming, and lead-safe containment with plastic sheeting and HEPA cleanup.

That is federal law, not an upsell. Ask for the RRP certification number and get a stated wood repair allowance in the bid, along with what happens when it is exceeded.

Comparing three Indianapolis bids

Make sure all three include the same number of coats, the same wash and scrape prep, the same caulk and wood repair allowance, and the same surfaces — shutters, gutters, downspouts, porch ceilings and detached garages are where scopes diverge.

Ask for two references from jobs completed three or more years ago. Three Indiana winters is the honest test of a prep job, and a fresh photo tells you nothing about it.

Common questions

How much does it cost to paint a house in Indianapolis?

Most homeowners report $3,800 to $7,800 for a one-story exterior and $7,500 to $15,000 for two-story wood siding. Interiors run $4,000 to $8,200 for a 1,800-2,500 sq ft home.

When is the best time to paint outside in Indianapolis?

May through October. Temperatures must stay above the coating minimum overnight, so late-October jobs risk poor cure even when the afternoon feels warm.

Do painters need a license in Indiana?

No statewide license exists. Verify Indianapolis contractor registration, insurance certificates from the insurer, and EPA RRP certification on homes built before 1978.

How many painters will contact me?

Never more than three. Henry sends your project to a maximum of three local painters and never resells your details.
